Heat
Our retail store is in an older building and the basement is not insulated. We estimated that we would save about $900 a year by insulating the basement, so we did it!
Our loading door was really leaky so we improved the seal. The people working in the area are much more comfortable now.
We had three forced air vents that were actually blowing air into the area above the false ceiling. This was not very efficient. We lowered the vents and now the store is more comfortable and we estimated that we are saving about $300.
I operate a small store and didn't turn the heat down at night (I thought I shouldn't). I now turn it down a few degrees and believe I am saving about $200 to $250.
Lighting
I replaced a 300 W ceiling light (sort of chandelier) with a 13 W fluorescent bulb on my desk...working 8-10 hours a day, that saves me about $55 per year.
We never thought about the amount of light in our store. We took about a quarter of the fluorescent tubes out and figure we will save about $750 a year.
We are replacing the 40 W tubes with 32 W tubes as they burn out...this will save us about $400 per year.
